Friendship

A person is on the religion of his close friend

The Prophet ﷺ made friendship a spiritual matter: your friends shape what you become, and love in Allah is one of the seven categories shaded on the Day of Judgment.

Overview

The Prophet ﷺ treated friendship not as a private preference but as one of the most powerful forces shaping a soul — for good and for harm.

A person is on the religion of his close friend, so let each of you look at whom he takes as a friend.

The likeness of the righteous companion and the evil companion is like that of the seller of musk and the blower of the bellows. From the seller of musk, you either buy some, or find its pleasant smell. As for the blower of the bellows, he will either burn your clothes or you will find its bad smell.

Seven will be shaded by Allah on the Day when there is no shade but His: … and two who loved each other for the sake of Allah, meeting for that and parting for that.

Context: Narrated by Abu Hurayra. The full hadith names seven categories. Also in Muslim (no. 1031).

What this means

The friend-and-perfumer hadith is measured, not paranoid. You don't have to become the friend to be shaped by them. Prolonged closeness leaves a residue — of speech, of humour, of what feels normal, of what feels excusable. The Prophet ﷺ asked us to be honest about that residue.

Love for Allah

The love hadith is one of the highest categories in Islamic ethics. Two people who meet because they see something of Allah in each other, and part in Him — no personal use of the friendship, no political convenience — are, in the Prophet's ﷺ words, among the seven shaded on the Day of Judgment. That is a devastatingly small category, and friendship is one of the doors into it.

This is not a licence to abandon non-Muslim friends

The Prophet ﷺ maintained deep relationships with non-Muslims throughout his life — trade partners, protectors, poets, neighbours. The hadith on close friendship is about who shapes you at depth, not about who you may know, love, work with, or care for. Confusing the two produces the caricatured Muslim who is loyal in the mosque and disloyal everywhere else.

Application today

Write down the three people you speak to most. Ask honestly: what have I picked up from them in the last year — in speech, in habits, in worldview? Is any of it something you'd want less of? Adjust the diet accordingly.

Reflection

The Prophet ﷺ said we take on the religion of our close friends. Whose religion are you slowly taking on?
