Paradise lies at the feet of mothers
The Qur'an pairs worship of Allah with kindness to parents. The Prophet ﷺ named the mother three times before the father and taught that no repayment of a parent is possible except freeing them from slavery.
In Islam, birr al-wālidayn — devotion to parents — is not a cultural nicety. It is a religious obligation ranked just after the worship of Allah Himself.
The Qur'an pairs the command to worship Allah alone with kindness to parents in four separate places (Baqara 2:83, Nisāʾ 4:36, Anʿām 6:151, Isrāʾ 17:23–24). The last passage forbids so much as saying 'uff' to them in irritation. The hadith below sit inside that Qur'anic frame.
“A man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, who among people is most deserving of my good company?' He said, 'Your mother.' The man said, 'Then who?' He said, 'Your mother.' The man said, 'Then who?' He said, 'Your mother.' The man said, 'Then who?' He said, 'Your father.'”

The mother is named three times before the father — a deliberate weighting for the extra cost she bore in pregnancy, birth and nursing (see Qur'an 31:14). The Prophet ﷺ turned a young man back from war because his parents were still alive. And no accumulated service, in his words, ever fully repays a parent. Kindness to them is not a favour; it is a debt.
This wording is attributed to the Prophet ﷺ in a report in al-Nasāʾī (no. 3104) and Ibn Mājah (no. 2781) whose exact wording is: 'Paradise is at their feet.' The most rigorously authenticated version speaks of jihad in the service of one's mother; the popular short form is a compression. The underlying teaching is undisputed.
The Qur'an (31:15) commands kindness to parents even when they urge disbelief, drawing the line only at obedience in disbelief itself. The Prophet ﷺ told Asmāʾ bint Abī Bakr to maintain the tie with her mushrik mother when she visited from Makkah (Bukhari no. 2620). Kindness is not conditional on the parent being Muslim, easy, or fair. It is conditional on nothing.
If your parents are alive, call one of them this week for no reason other than to ask how they are and to thank them specifically for one thing. If they are not alive, give a ṣadaqah, make duʿāʾ for them, and keep the tie with someone they loved.
The Prophet ﷺ turned a man back from the battlefield to serve his mother. What in your life feels more urgent than your parents right now — and is it?
