Surah Maryam — Mary, Jesus and Divine Mercy

Surah 19 — 98 verses — Meccan

The chapter named after Mary — the only woman named in the Qur'an — recounting the births of John and Jesus, the prayers of Zechariah, and the merciful presence of God in fragile moments.

Overview

Surah Maryam is the only chapter in the Qur'an named after a woman. Mary appears here not only in one scene but as the central figure of an extended account, from her retreat from her family to the birth of Jesus and his miraculous speech in the cradle. The surah opens with the story of Zechariah (Zakariyya) and his son John (Yahya) and turns to Mary and Jesus, then names Abraham, Moses, Ishmael, Idris and other prophets.

Context

The surah was revealed in Mecca and was among the passages the early Muslims who emigrated to Abyssinia recited before the Christian king (Negus), according to the sirah accounts recorded by Ibn Hisham. The king wept when he heard it. The Islamic account of Mary and Jesus was, from the beginning, part of the Muslim community's public identity.

Arabic text: AlQuran Cloud API — Uthmani text (Tanzil-derived). Translation source: The Qur'an — English translation of the meaning.

What this means

The Qur'an affirms clearly that Mary was a virgin and that Jesus was conceived by God's command without a father. Classical commentators including al-Tabari and Ibn Kathir handle these verses with reverence: the miracle is real, and Mary's chastity is defended.

Maryam · 19:30

قَالَ إِنِّى عَبْدُ ٱللَّهِ ءَاتَىٰنِىَ ٱلْكِتَٰبَ وَجَعَلَنِى نَبِيًّۭا

[Jesus] said, ‘Indeed, I am the servant of Allah. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet.’— Translation of the meaning by Sahih International
Arabic text: AlQuran Cloud API — Uthmani text (Tanzil-derived). Translation source: The Qur'an — English translation of the meaning.
Maryam · 19:31

وَجَعَلَنِى مُبَارَكًا أَيْنَ مَا كُنتُ وَأَوْصَٰنِى بِٱلصَّلَوٰةِ وَٱلزَّكَوٰةِ مَا دُمْتُ حَيًّۭا

‘And He has made me blessed wherever I am and has enjoined upon me prayer and zakah as long as I remain alive.’— Translation of the meaning by Sahih International
Arabic text: AlQuran Cloud API — Uthmani text (Tanzil-derived). Translation source: The Qur'an — English translation of the meaning.

What this means

In Islamic teaching, Jesus (Isa) is a prophet and messenger of God — miraculously born, given the Gospel, and honoured. Verses 30–33 are placed on Jesus' own lips: he identifies himself as the servant of God, called to prayer, kindness to his mother and a life of devotion.

Maryam · 19:35

مَا كَانَ لِلَّهِ أَن يَتَّخِذَ مِن وَلَدٍۢ ۖ سُبْحَٰنَهُۥٓ ۚ إِذَا قَضَىٰٓ أَمْرًۭا فَإِنَّمَا يَقُولُ لَهُۥ كُن فَيَكُونُ

It is not [befitting] for Allah to take a son; exalted is He! When He decrees an affair, He only says to it, ‘Be,’ and it is.— Translation of the meaning by Sahih International
Arabic text: AlQuran Cloud API — Uthmani text (Tanzil-derived). Translation source: The Qur'an — English translation of the meaning.
Maryam · 19:36

وَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ رَبِّى وَرَبُّكُمْ فَٱعْبُدُوهُ ۚ هَٰذَا صِرَٰطٌۭ مُّسْتَقِيمٌۭ

[Jesus said:] ‘And indeed, Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. That is a straight path.’— Translation of the meaning by Sahih International
Arabic text: AlQuran Cloud API — Uthmani text (Tanzil-derived). Translation source: The Qur'an — English translation of the meaning.

What this does not mean

This lesson does not aim to attack Christian belief. Muslims and Christians share reverence for Mary and for Jesus. Where they differ is on whether Jesus is God, or God's Son in a literal sense: the Qur'an says no. Verse 35 states that God does not take a son, and verse 36 has Jesus himself saying, ‘Allah is my Lord and your Lord — worship Him.’ Muslims read these verses as Jesus' own testimony to Tawhid. Christians read the Gospels differently. Naming the disagreement honestly, without caricature on either side, is more respectful than pretending it does not exist.

Scholarly differences

Classical scholars discuss what ‘made me blessed wherever I am’ (19:31) implies for Christian scriptures, and what Jesus' cradle-speech means as a legal precedent. Different tafsir traditions weigh these differently. What is not disputed among Muslims is Jesus' status as a prophet, his miraculous birth and his eventual return.

Maryam · 19:96

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ سَيَجْعَلُ لَهُمُ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنُ وُدًّۭا

Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds — the Most Merciful will appoint for them affection.— Translation of the meaning by Sahih International
Arabic text: AlQuran Cloud API — Uthmani text (Tanzil-derived). Translation source: The Qur'an — English translation of the meaning.

Application today

Surah Maryam offers a picture of God's mercy meeting people in vulnerable moments: a childless couple in old age, a frightened young woman under a palm tree, a baby speaking in defence of his mother. It teaches that God's help often arrives in the unlikeliest form — a shaken date palm, a spring of water — and that the correct response is worship and gratitude.

Reflection

Mary was told to shake a palm tree for dates while in labour. What ‘small action’ is God asking you to take inside a hard moment right now?
