Al-Hujurat — Community, Respect and Human Dignity

Surah 49 — 18 verses — Medinan

A Medinan chapter that reads as a community handbook: how to speak to the Prophet ﷺ, how to verify news, how to reconcile disputes, how to avoid mockery, suspicion and backbiting, and how to understand human diversity.

Overview

Al-Hujurat (‘the Chambers’) takes its name from the chambers adjoining the Prophet's ﷺ mosque in Medina. Revealed in the later Medinan period, it addresses a community that has grown large, diverse and sometimes conflicted. Its guidance is practical: respect the Prophet ﷺ, verify news, reconcile disputes, do not mock, do not suspect, do not backbite, and remember that human diversity is designed.

Al-Hujurat · 49:6

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِن جَآءَكُمْ فَاسِقٌۢ بِنَبَإٍۢ فَتَبَيَّنُوٓا۟ أَن تُصِيبُوا۟ قَوْمًۢا بِجَهَٰلَةٍۢ فَتُصْبِحُوا۟ عَلَىٰ مَا فَعَلْتُمْ نَٰدِمِينَ

O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.— Translation of the meaning by Sahih International
Arabic text: AlQuran Cloud API — Uthmani text (Tanzil-derived). Translation source: The Qur'an — English translation of the meaning.

What this means

Classical commentators including al-Qurtubi record specific reports of asbab al-nuzul for verse 6, involving a false report about a certain tribe that nearly led to unjust military action. Even setting aside the specific occasion, the ethical principle is clear: news that could harm people must be verified before it is acted on.

Al-Hujurat · 49:9

And if two factions among the believers should fight, then make settlement between the two.— Translation of the meaning by Sahih International
Arabic text: AlQuran Cloud API — Uthmani text (Tanzil-derived). Translation source: The Qur'an — English translation of the meaning.
Al-Hujurat · 49:10

إِنَّمَا ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ إِخْوَةٌۭ فَأَصْلِحُوا۟ بَيْنَ أَخَوَيْكُمْ ۚ وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ

The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers. And fear Allah that you may receive mercy.— Translation of the meaning by Sahih International
Arabic text: AlQuran Cloud API — Uthmani text (Tanzil-derived). Translation source: The Qur'an — English translation of the meaning.

What this means

Verses 9 and 10 treat conflict inside the community as a shared responsibility. If two groups of believers are fighting, the community is obliged to reconcile — not to pick sides for the sake of picking sides, and not to walk away. Reconciliation is presented as a communal duty, not a private preference.

Al-Hujurat · 49:11

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them… And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames.— Translation of the meaning by Sahih International
Arabic text: AlQuran Cloud API — Uthmani text (Tanzil-derived). Translation source: The Qur'an — English translation of the meaning.
Al-Hujurat · 49:12

O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it.— Translation of the meaning by Sahih International
Arabic text: AlQuran Cloud API — Uthmani text (Tanzil-derived). Translation source: The Qur'an — English translation of the meaning.
Sahih al-BukhariBook: Book of Good Manners and Form6064Ṣaḥīḥ (authentic)Graded by Al-Bukhari (compiler)
Beware of suspicion, for suspicion is the most untruthful speech. Do not spy on one another, do not compete with one another, do not envy one another, do not hate one another, do not turn away from one another — be, O servants of Allah, brothers.

Source: Sahih al-Bukhari.

What this means

Verses 11–12 name specific behaviours: ridicule, insulting names, negative assumption, spying and backbiting. Backbiting — speaking about someone in their absence in a way they would dislike — is compared to eating the flesh of a dead relative. The image is deliberately shocking. The point is that most people do not view speech as an ethical act; the Qur'an insists that it is.

Al-Hujurat · 49:13

O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.— Translation of the meaning by Sahih International
Arabic text: AlQuran Cloud API — Uthmani text (Tanzil-derived). Translation source: The Qur'an — English translation of the meaning.

Scholarly differences

Verse 49:13 is one of the most quoted verses in modern discussions of diversity. It is often reduced to a slogan, but classical exegetes — al-Tabari, Ibn Kathir, al-Qurtubi — read it more carefully. The verse addresses ‘mankind’ (not only Muslims). It states that human differences of family and community exist so that people may know one another (li-ta'arafu) — that is, cooperate and learn — not so that any group may claim superiority. It then sets the actual measure of nobility: taqwa (God-consciousness), not lineage, wealth, race or nationality.

What this does not mean

The verse does not erase difference or flatten every community into sameness. It does not say all people are automatically equal in every social outcome. It says that in the sight of God, the measure is God-consciousness — and it rejects any claim of superiority based on ethnicity, tribe or nation.

Application today

A reader who takes Al-Hujurat seriously will hesitate before forwarding a rumour, will look for openings to reconcile disputes, will notice when they are about to mock or assume the worst — and will refuse to build identity on being ‘above’ anyone else.

Reflection

Which of the six behaviours warned against in verses 11–12 — ridicule, insulting names, negative assumption, spying, backbiting, mockery — is closest to something you have done in the last month?
